London Docklands Development Corporation
After the closing of all of the docks in the proximity of the city, the area became more and more deserted. The old warehouses fell into ruin, the filled docks became a wasteland of scrub and weed. An organisation called London Docklands Development Corporation was founded and their area of responsibilty was to reclaim and reform the former area of docks.
They, for example, built the Millenium Dome at the Greenwich peninsula, which contributed greatly to the regeneration of this area. This organisation was in charge from July 1981 to March 1998.
Tubeline DLR
One of the reasons for the decay was the physical separation from the rest of London. The first task of the LDDC was to connect the docklands with the city by new means of public transportation. New roads, bridges and underground lines were put into service, such as the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), which connects Tower Hamlets with the Isle of Dogs and the London City Airport in the former area of the Royal Docks.

Recreation and enterprises
Today the docklands hold many enterprises on the Isle of Dogs and provide a lot of recreational space around the former dock waters. Many of the warehouses have been transformed to apartment complexes and some of the docks, like St. Katherine's Docks, hold small private yachts and boats.
London's port
The only dock that is still in use is the Tilbury dock, which is called "Port of Tilbury" today. It got extended many times and is capable of handling large amounts of shipping containers. The larger cargo ships require to be docked in coastal deep-water ports.
